Climatic requirement: | Okra is a tropical vegetable crop which grows best in warm climate with temperature range of 20-35°C. It is available throughout the year with a peak season during the summer months. It is highly sensitive to frost. The seeds do not germinate below 17°C and optimum temperature for seed germination is 29°C. |
Season: | In India, okra is generally grown during kharif/rainy season (sowing time: June-July)and summer season (sowing time: January-February). |
Soil: | Okra grows best in wide range of soils, but prefers well drained soils with high in organic matter and pH of 6.0- 6.8.However loose, friable and well manured loam soil are the best. It is difficult to have a good crop stand on clay soil. |
Method of sowing: | There are three methods of sowing namely, broadcasting, line sowing and dibbling. However, the seeds are sown on ridges in February-March on the side facing the sun and flat beds in May-July. |
