Mustard ( Brassica juncea )
Climatic requirement: Mustard crop is grown in tropical and temperate zones.For this crop 15°C to 25° C temperature is suitable.A warm weather (20°C) during seed germination, long sunny bright days (25°C-27°C) at flowering and pod formation are most suitable for this crop.This crop is not drought tolerant. It requires an annual precipitation of 35-45 cm.
Season: In India this is grown in Rabi season from September-October to February-March.
Soil: Mustard crop can be grown on a wide range of soils from sandy loam to clay loams. Light loam or sandy loam soils are the best for their cultivation. Heavy soils or heavy clay loam soils do not give good results. Soils with pH value about 7.0 are ideal for their plant growth and development. Black cotton soil is not recommended for mustard cultivation. For brown and black mustard light soils and for yellow mustard heavy soils are recommended. Mustard crop is very sensitive to water logging therefore soil should be well drained.
Method of sowing: i) Broadcast method: This method is not generally recommended. ii) Line sowing method: Seeds are sown in lines with the help of seed drill or para. The recommended spacing between lines is 40 to 45cm, among plants is 10 to 15 cm and seed depth are 2-3 cm.
